Dancing with a growth mindset – how to set goals

So what does dancing with a growth mindset actually mean I hear you ask?  Well, let me explain.  Are you looking for the secret weapon that will help your dancer unlock the key to their true potential?  You may not be able to help them with their pirouettes or their acrobatics BUT there is one REALLY important and REALLY powerful thing that you absolutely CAN help them with and that is their mindset.  As crazy dance mommas, we all want the absolute best for our budding superstars. We want them to be the absolute best they can be.  This is where growth mindset comes in.

One of the key elements of dancing with a growth mindset is understanding that abilities aren’t fixed but rather that effort and attitude determine abilities. That’s right, forget the ‘I can’t do it’, ‘everyone else can do it’, ‘I’ll never be as good as them’ and say hello to a dancer focussed on their goals, believing in their ability to improve and ready to fly!  Once dancers learn that challenges help them grow, that potential is not predetermined and that failure is an opportunity to grow the results are dramatic. Rather than your dancer being limited by a fixed mindset when they are faced with a new skill and thinking ‘I’m not good at this’, ‘I’ll never be as good as such and such’ or thinking, ‘it’s good enough as it is’, imagine if a dancer was constantly and confidently trying to learn and grow. Let your dancer be inspired rather than threatened by the success of others and help them understand that new skills take time.  These are the fundamentals of growth mindset and learning how to set goals is a huge part of this shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. If you really want to start making a differnce to your child’s dancing today, check out the Success Mindset Journal designed especially for dancers.  It has been designed in conjunction with dance teachers and childhood development professionals to bring the latest research into performance psychology to competitive dancers.  92.5% of dancers surveyed report an improvement in their competition scores and 97.3% report an increase in their enjoyment of the dance competition experience after they have completed mindset training? It is a powerful tool that you can download and get started with straight away and covers everything from overcoming nerves and mental blocks, banishing negative thinking, developing laser focus, goal setting, taking corrections and how to make meaningul changes to dance training to achieve the goals your dancer want to achieve.  You can download this powerful tool right here.

Meanwhile, if you’d like to grab this free goal-setting worksheet, just enter your email below.  I use this worksheet all the time as it really helps dancers understand why the basics of technique are important, how little steps are the building blocks for all the big impressive steps they are so fond of. You can really see them processing it all and it really opens their eyes to why we do certain things and how important the fundamentals are.  They are then encouraged to set their own goal and map out the steps it will take to get them there.  Enjoy 🙂
